sysstat for Debian ================== The sar(1) command can display both current statistics (when sar is called with interval and count parameters, e.g. `sar 1 10') or all-day statistics (when is called without those parameters, e.g. just `sar'). To display all-day statistics with the sar(1) command, the data must have been collected first with sadc(8) or sa1(8) and saved in a file in /var/log/sysstat directory. This Debian package provides a system crontab file, which runs sa1 script, but it is by default DISABLED and the statistics are not collected. Thus when you try to run sar without any parameters, you most probably get error like `Cannot open /var/log/sysstat/saXX: No such file or directory'. To avoid the error, please enable collecting data by the crontab by running dpkg-reconfigure sysstat and answering `yes' to the question `Do you want to activate sysstat's cron job?' -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- As it was said above, the package installs system crontab files, namely /etc/cron.d/sysstat and /etc/cron.daily/sysstat. There's no need to follow the `Examples' section of sa1(8) and sa2(8) man pages and create entries in your root crontab file by hand. Creating such entries can lead to a situation, where e.g. two copies of sa2(8) script will be run simultaneously, which can cause errors. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Before reporting a bug regarding this package, please make sure you read the FAQ.gz file from this directory. -- Robert Luberda <robert@debian.org> Thu, 25 Nov 2004 23:06:45 +0100
