UNRAR-FREE ========== Description ----------- unrar-free is a free software version of the non-free unrar utility. This program is a simple command-line front-end to libarchive, and can list and extract RAR archives but also other formats supported by libarchive. It does not rival the non-free unrar in terms of features, but special care has been taken to ensure it meets most user's needs. User Documentation ------------------ This is an abstract of the unrar-free(1) man page: Usage: unrar-free [OPTION...] ARCHIVE [FILE...] [DESTINATION] Extract files from rar archives. -x, --extract Extract files from archive (default) -t, --list List files in archive -f, --force Overwrite files when extracting --extract-newer Only extract newer files from the archive --extract-no-paths Don't create directories while extracting -p, --password Decrypt archive using a password -?, --help Give this help list --usage Give a short usage message -V, --version Print program version Development ----------- Please use the issue tracker and merge requests that are part of the git hosting platform to hand in bug reports and patches. All changes have to be compatible with the GPL-2.0-or-later project license. If you do not include any license information with your changes, it is assumed that they are licensed under GPL-2.0-or-later. History ------- unrar-free used to be developed on Gna! which was shut down. It is now maintained at https://gitlab.com/bgermann/unrar-free which holds most of the original CVS history that was exported via cvs-fast-export. There are changes that might be legally problematic and so the git tree is rebased on top of commit 745cb033fa ("add adddir function"), removing the problematic changes, and dropping some hunks from the usable changes. After the original upstream was shut down, most development on the project happened on the Debian package, which fixed several CVEs and added a man page with the changes licensed under GPL-2.0-or-later. These are imported into the tree. unrar-free used to incorporate the GPL'd UniquE RAR Library (https://www.unrarlib.org) by Christian Scheurer and Johannes Winkelmann. Bastian Germann reimplemented the program based on libarchive, which is one of two free software implementations with RAR 5.0 support as of Sep 2021. The Unarchiver has more advanced features but it is not developed with reusing as a library in other software in mind. The unarr library is based on it but it is a non-trivial port that lacks important features like RAR 5.0. So libarchive was the natural choice. There used to be an unar wrapper for unsupported archive types in older versions that was removed. If you need such a wrapper, please take a look at unrar_wrapper (https://github.com/openSUSE/unrar_wrapper).
